Local Roundup: Xplosion wins Beach Soccer tourney

The Tracy Xplosion under-11 girls soccer team took first place at the 10th annual Santa Cruz Pro Am Beach Soccer tournament Saturday and Sunday at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.

The team outscored opponents 29-2 in three games of group play, beating the Dublin Fury, Livermore Fusion and West Coast Soccer. Xplosion won Sunday’s championship game over Dublin United 7-3.



WCS Wonder claims third straight Orange Bowl title

West Coast Soccer’s under-15 girls Wonder won their third consecutive Tracy Futbol Club Orange Bowl title during the Memorial Day weekend, May 24 and 25, at Tracy Sports Complex and Plasencia Fields.

The Livermore-based team, including defenders Alexis Reddens and Erica Dias of Tracy, played up in the U16 bracket and allowed only one goal in regulation play in four games. The team played to a 1-1 tie with Almaden Quicksilver Green, won 3-0 over Almaden Quicksilver Black, and won 1-0 over Tracy Futbol Club/Tracy United.

Wonder played to a 0-0 tie in regulation against Almaden Green and won on a 5-3 penalty kick shootout.



Basketball teams collect three first-place Jam On It trophies

Two local basketball clubs had a big Memorial Day Weekend, May 24 to 26, at the Jam On It basketball tournament at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center in Reno.

Boys and girls teams in second-grade through varsity age groups competed in brackets divided by skill level. About 1,200 teams participated.

The Mountain House Wolverines had two championship teams. Coach Tavio Meeks and his sixth-grade boys went 4-0 in their age group’s gold bracket, collecting a first-place trophy, and coach Steven Trujillo’s sixth-grade boys went 3-1 and took first in their age group’s silver bracket.

Four more Wolverines teams placed third and one placed fourth, putting the local club’s combined record at 20-8 overall for the weekend.

The Tracy Spartans also competed. The ninth-grade boys, coached by Vener Lacuna, went 3-1 for the weekend and took first place in their age group’s silver bracket.

The Spartans took 10 teams in all, finishing with three third-place teams, a fourth-place team and four fifth-place teams.
