The Sac-Joaquin Section championship meet on Saturday was a chance for young swimmers from Kimball and Tracy high schools to establish themselves among the section’s top athletes.

After the trials on May 15 and Friday at Tokay High in Lodi, nearly all of the local swimmers who qualified for the championship and consolation heats on Saturday competed in the freshman-sophomore division.

Top local swimmer was Kimball High freshman Kamryn Lucero, who placed fourth in the championship heat of the frosh-soph girls 100–yard freestyle with a time of 55.78 seconds. Lucero also placed fourth in the consolation heat of the 50 freestyle (25.77) and was part of the Kimball 400 freestyle relay team that won the consolation heat in that event (3:48.40).

The 400 freestyle relay time is nearly four seconds faster than the previous school record (3:52.72) that Lucero and her teammates, sophomore Gaby Perez and freshmen Sasha Betts and Scarlett Green, set at the Valley Oak League championships on May 3.

Top swimmer for Tracy High was sophomore Nathan Hu, with a fifth-place finish in the championship heat of the frosh-soph boys 500 freestyle (4:54.40) and seventh in the championship heat of the 200 freestyle (1:49.34).

Tracy swimmers who competed in Saturday’s consolation heat races were sophomore Preston Tsang, second in the boys 100 breaststroke (1:04.03), sophomore Bree Houser, second in the girls 100 breasstroke (1:11.98), and freshman Brandon Brown, fourth in the boys 500 freestyle (5:01.70).

Tracy’s team of freshman Brandon Brown and sophomores Spencer Bishop, Nathan Hu and Preston Tsang placed seventh in the frosh-soph boys consolation heat of the 200 freestyle relay (1:37.64).

The only varsity team to make Saturday’s consolation heats was the Kimball boys 400-yard freestyle relay team of juniors Seth Suzuki and Brandon Nusser and seniors Daniel Russell-Cheung and Josh Wagstaff, who placed seventh (3:28.12).

Also competing for Tracy High was sophomore Alex Lopez, who placed 11th overall in the frosh-soph boys diving competition on May 10 at McClatchy High in Sacramento.
