Tennis: Kimball sophomore has chance to repeat as VOL champ

Kimball High sophomore Garrett Chun set himself up to contend for a second Valley Oak League singles championship title as he won three matches in a row on Tuesday, the first day of the VOL singles tournament, at Weston Ranch High.

Chun, who won the VOL singles title in 2013 as a freshman, came in as the No. 1 seed and had a bye for the first round. He beat Andrew Rosette of East Union 8-1, beat Spencer Lyons of Sonora 6-0, 6-0, and beat Mike Lopez of Manteca 6-0, 6-3 in the semifinals. Results of Thursday’s final match were not available at press time.

Also playing in the VOL tournament for Kimball were junior Nick Reilley, who had a bye for the first round, beat Gino Mercado of Manteca High 8-2 and lost to Andrew Klatt of Sonora High 2-6, 1-6. His teammate, senior Mark Dalupan, also had a bye for the first round and beat Keegan D’Souza of Sierra High 8-1 before losing to Yok Jing Ma of Manteca 3-6, 0-6.
