Track and field: West boys take first in frosh-soph division at Mudville Invitational

West High’s freshman-sophomore boys placed first in their division at the Mudville Invitational track and field meet Saturday at Bear Creek High.

West’s frosh-soph boys totaled 133 points and were the top team among 14 teams.

Leading athletes for West included sophomore Christian Velasco, whose first-place triple jump mark of 42 feet, 8 inches is a new meet record. Also setting a meet record was West’s first-place 4x100 meter relay team of sophomores Dion Collier, Justin Velasco, Christian Velasco and Matthew Roe, with a time of 44.85. Collier also won the 100 meters (11.51) and the 200 (23.35), and freshman Zayed Zaman won the high jump (5-6).

West’s varsity boys placed eighth out of 14 teams with a score of 23. Top athlete for West was senior Huruy Zeratsion, who placed second in the 800 meters (2:04.98).

West’s varsity girls placed second out of 13 teams with a score of 64. Senior Elise Green was the top Wolf Pack athlete, winning the triple jump (33-8).

West’s freshman sophomore girls were also second in their 12-team division, scoring 83 points. Sophomore Julia Flohr won both the 800 (2:36.19) and the 1,600 (5:44.24), and freshman Danielle Hopkins won the high jump (4-6).
