The Kimball girls soccer team had to get organized quickly Tuesday at Sierra High to come home with a 4-2 win.
That win affirmed the Jaguars’ hold on second place in the Valley Oak League and assured Kimball of a place in the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs.
Kimball coach Ron Hattley said the Jaguars had to overcome some early mistakes after the Sierra Timberwolves (11-7-2, 6-5-1 VOL) took a 2-0 lead in the first 12 minutes.
Kimball (10-3, 9-2 VOL) started to chip away at Sierra’s lead starting with a goal in the 23rd minute by sophomore Samantha Tran, who dashed past Sierra’s defenders after taking a pass from junior Taylor Hopkins. Tran sprinted past Sierra’s defense again to score in the 28th minute after taking a long pass from sophomore Mia Drake.
Kimball took the lead in the second half as junior Abby Dyer scored on a penalty kick in the 51st minute and again in the 76th minute, when she took a pass from sophomore Kayla Pereira and outmaneuvered the Sierra defenders and goalkeeper for clear shot.
Kimball goalkeeper Amanda Leal, a freshman, had 11 saves.
Lincoln 3, Tracy 2
Tracy High’s soccer team took its first loss of the San Joaquin Athletic Association season to visiting Lincoln High of Stockton on April 17.
Tracy (14-3-1, 6-1-1 SJAA) still holds first place in the league, but coach Nate Perry said the loss was a reminder that any team in the SJAA could emerge victorious.
Tracy has two league games left, Tuesday at Chavez High and Thursday at home against Bear Creek High.
Lincoln (4-3-1 SJAA) led 1-0 at the half and made it a 2-0 game two minutes into the second half.
Tracy scored its first goal in the 47th minute when sophomore Ashley Hallen crossed the ball from the right side and senior Daesha Brown was in position to head it into the goal. Brown scored again three minutes later with a breakaway and a one-on-one shot against the Lincoln goalie, tying the score.
“We should have kept up our energy. If we had kept up our energy, we could have scored more,” Brown said after the game.
Lincoln made it a 3-2 game in the 66th minute with a hard shot fired from within Tracy’s defense into the upper right corner of the goal.
Tracy’s junior varsity team beat Lincoln 6-0. Daisy Galindo and Alexis Redens scored two goals each, Becca DeStefano and Sammy Caro each scored one and Caro, Galindo , Jessica Taylor, Bailey Hoffman and Jazmyn Byrd had assists.

Sonora scored its only goal in the 79th minute on a free kick.
