Local high school golfers got a warm-up for their respective league and division tournaments at the Tracy-West Invitational on Monday at Tracy Golf and Country Club.

The 10-team tournament was smaller than in years past, but it provided strong competition. Liberty High of Brentwood was tournament champion with a score of 414, and Ripon Christian was runner-up with 427.

West High placed fourth (453), Tracy High was sixth (462) and Kimball High placed seventh (473).

West High senior Mark Olson was the top local golfer, shooting 78 on the par-72 course. Olson said that Monday’s outcome gave him confidence that he could keep improving through the season-end championship tournaments.

“It’s the first time I’ve ever broken 80 through 18 holes, so it’s the best round I’ve ever had,” he said. “I feel like it’s just practice for our other 18-hole tournaments.”

He said his advantage Monday was his knowledge of the course. His round included a birdie on the 465-yard 15th hole, the longest par-4 hole at Tracy Golf and Country Club.

“This is our home course, and the greens play really true. Once you get to know them, it’s actually fairly easy to two-putt or one-putt from a fairly far-away distance,” Olson said. “I feel like that’s what gave our team and Tracy an advantage over other teams.”

Olson’s score put him in third place among individual golfers, behind Nick Sharp of Ripon High (75) and Kyle Colyn of Ripon Christian High (77). Fourth and fifth place were taken by Liberty High teammates Jacob Hernandez (79) and Kirabo Reed (80), with a three-way tie for sixth place among Reese Maxfield of Kimball High and Andrew Manes and Jesse DeRusso of Ripon Christian (81).

Maxfield, a junior, said he hoped to improve in the week before the Valley Oak League tournament Tuesday at Micke Grove Golf Links.

“There were a couple things I could have done differently,” Maxfield said. “Putting I didn’t do well. I had four or five three-putts.”

Tracy’s leading golfer was junior Jared Finney, who finished with an 83 and also lamented his missed putts and chip shots.

“I should have shot in the mid-70s, because I was hitting the ball pretty good. It was just my short game wasn’t too good today,” he said.

Golf teams will finish their league seasons this week and have their championship tournaments Monday and Tuesday.

Tracy has the best shot at a league title, going 7-2 so far with another match Tuesday against Chavez High at Swenson Park Golf Course in Stockton. Tracy coach Derek Solano said that the only teams that had beaten Tracy — Lincoln and Lodi — would face off on Thursday .

If Lodi beats Lincoln, then Lodi will have the advantage going into the SJAA championship tournament on Monday at Lockeford Springs Golf Course in Lodi. If Tracy beats Chavez on Tuesday and Lincoln beats Lodi on Thursday, the SJAA will have a three-way tie for first, and the winner of the SJAA tournament will be the league champion.

The SJAA champion and runner-up will advance their full teams to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I South tournament May 5 at Elkhorn Golf Course in Stockton. Six individual golfers not on the top two teams will also compete that day.

West (6-3 Tri-City Athletic League) had one more match at Tracy Golf and Country Club against Stagg on Thursday. The TCAL tournament will be Monday at Elkhorn Golf Course in Stockton. The TCAL will also advance two teams and six at-large individuals to the Division I South tournament.

Kimball finished its VOL season at 6-8 and will play in the league tournament at Micke Grove Golf Links in Lodi on Tuesday . The top three teams from the VOL, plus six at-large individuals, will advance to the SJS Division IV tournament May 5 at Manteca Park Golf Course.
