St. Mary’s 7, West 2
The West High softball team played a close game with visiting St. Mary’s High for the first four innings, but the Rams took full advantage of a fifth-inning throwing error and then rallied for four runs in the seventh inning for the win.
West sophomore starting pitcher Janae Sims had given up just one run on five hits through the first four innings. West (7-6-1, 2-1 Tri-City Athletic League) got on the scoreboard in the second when Sims singled and pinch runner Gabriella Olivas scored on sophomore Brittney Reyes infield single.
The Rams (9-5, 2-0 TCAL) took the lead when Keala Brown singled with one out in the fifth and freshman Saige Pye drove the ball to deep center for a double. West’s throw to try to catch Brown at third base went wide, and both she and Pye scored as West scrambled to recover the ball.
“I give credit to their bats,” West coach Marty Torres said of St. Mary’s. “When they made contact, they were legit, but then we compounded it and gave them extra bases.”
West scored its second run in the sixth when sophomore Hailey Martin walked, junior Sam Asbra singled and Sims drove Martin in with a single to right field. St. Mary’s came up with four more runs in the seventh, boosted by a two-RBI double for Pye.
