The “Dancing with the Tracy Stars” event is at 7:30 p.m. April 12 at the Grand Theatre, 715 Central Ave. The six contestants will compete to raise money for local community service organizations.
Drug Abuse Resistance Education educator, and former Tracy councilman, Steve Abercrombie will raise money for D.A.R.E. programs at schools throughout the Tracy, Jefferson, Lammersville, Banta and New Jerusalem school districts.
Capt. Jim Haskell of the Tracy fire department is raising money for Case For Kids, a nonprofit that is currently serving more than 200 children in Tracy and Mountain House foster homes.
Real estate agent Jeanette Pombo is raising money for the American Cancer Society and the local Relay for Life. Pombo is also dancing in honor of cancer survivor Janice Mattos and in memory of John Frerichs.
The director of the Academy of Performing Arts, Deborah Skinner, will raise money for the Children’s Dance Theatre of Tracy, which provides performance and education opportunities for local children, including those with special needs.
Athletic Perfection coach and founder Julie Van Os is also raising money for Case for Kids, which provides a personalized suitcase and some clothes and toys to foster children, who are often transferred from home to home with all their belongings stuffed into plastic garbage bags.
Kal Waetzig, pastor at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, will dance to raise money for Tracy Interfaith Ministries, which provides food, clothing and financial help with bills to almost 1,700 local families in need every month.
The six local celebrities will spend the week before April 12 learning dance moves with their professional partners before the competition night. The audience in attendance, and three unannounced celebrity judges, will pick the winner. The dancers will raise money for their charities by selling tickets to the performance.
Tickets for “Dancing with the Tracy Stars” are on sale at the Grand Theatre box office or at www.atthegrand.com and range from $49 to $100. The latter price includes five days of dance lessons with the professional dancers and a VIP party the night of the performance.
