Local Roundup: In-Shape tennis team headed to district championships

The mixed doubles tennis team from Tracy In-Shape Sports Club will go to the U.S. Tennis Association Northern California District Championships this weekend at Diamond Hills Racquet Club in Oakley. The event will include matches Friday, Saturday and Sunday in a round-robin format.

The In-Shape team gained a spot in the tournament after it beat the teams from Twin Arbors Athletic Club and Oak Park in the Central Valley Group playoffs. The Oak Park match was April 18 at In-Shape, where the Tracy team won 2-1, and the Twin Arbors contest was in Lodi on Saturday, and the Tracy team won that match 2-1.

The In-Shape Tracy team has 15 members, including Mischelle Fielsch, who has gone undefeated in nine matches since January, and Khang Huynh, who is undefeated in eight matches.

Tracy USA wrestlers compete at Granite Bay

Ten wrestlers from Tracy USA Wrestling Club brought home nine medals from the Sacramento Area Wrestling Association Greco and freestyle wrestling championships at Granite Bay High on Saturday.

In the bantam division, Eli Blackwell won the gold medal in the Greco category, and took his first loss in five weeks of freestyle competition as he took the second-place plaque for his class.

In the intermediate division, Sammo Blackwell brought home a silver medal in Greco, Brock McCarty took third place in freestyle, Alex Garcia took first place in freestyle, and Jaskaran Singh competed in both freestyle and Greco but did not place.

In the novice division, Noah Blackwell wrestled only in the freestyle and missed the medal rounds by one match.

In the schoolboy division, Trent Nicholson dominated both the freestyle and Greco tournaments at his weight class, taking the gold plaque and gold medal in freestyle and Greco.

In the cadet division, Zach Blackwell, a Tracy High varsity wrestler, competed in the freestyle tournament and advanced to the medal round-robin, but did not place.

In the junior division, Chad Fraga, co-captain of the Tracy High varsity wrestling squad, competed in his second freestyle and first Greco tournament of the season. He advanced to the medal round in the freestyle but did not place, and took a silver medal in the Greco tournament after losing to wrestlers who had placed in the California Interscholastic Federation state finals.

Also this past weekend, Tracy USA wrestler Greg Viloreal went to the Santa Clara Valley Wrestling Association tournament at Oak Grove High in San Jose, and competed in both Greco and freestyle. He won first place in both styles.

West club takes four medals in San Jose

Four members of West Wrestling Club went to San Jose on Saturday for the Soaring Eagles Classic at Oak Grove High. Mitchell Selna earned two gold medals in the 112-pound schoolboy division. He won both the freestyle and Greco tournaments after he scored two pins and went undefeated.

Also in the schoolboy division, Roy Bravo (120) earned a silver medal. A.J. Husary (130) won a silver medal in the novice division, and Mason Salazar (55) won two of his four matches in the bantam division.

Blue baseball takes first in Modesto tourney

The San Joaquin Valley Blues boys 11-and-under baseball team took first place in the Buccaneer Baseball Tournament in Modesto on April 18 and 19.

The Blues scored 41 runs, hit three home runs and stole 32 bases. Daniel Farfan had nine base hits for the weekend, including two home runs, seven runs batted-in and nine runs scored. He also pitched 5 2/3 innings. Kyle Hunt had five hits, including a home run, batted in two runs and scored six times. He pitched four innings in the championship game and struck out five batters. Other Blues batters were Alex Haines with five RBIs and five runs scored, Jack Bloss with four RBIs and five runs scored, Justin Mills with four hits, eight runs and eight stolen bases, Steven Blackwell with five hits, Devin Nelson with four hits, and Matt Sullivan with four RBIs. Brandon Russell pitched four innings with three strikeouts. Jack Bloss, Christian Shwartz, Robbie Karbowski and Matt Sullivan also pitched for the Blues.

The Blues play next at the Cinco de Mayo fiesta in Manteca on Saturday and Sunday.

Carson gets high score at WVB

The high bowler for last week at West Valley Bowl was Kit Carson who has been bowling in Tracy for the past three years. Last week, he bowled a series of 822, including back-to-back 289 games and a 244.
