“I feel it was a vote of confidence in our partnership,” Tracy Learning Center Executive Director Virginia Stewart said. “I feel like we’re in a better place with the district right now. Some of the things that were in difficulties on both sides have been worked out.”
The motion to renew the charter was made by Trustee Kelly Lewis, followed by a second by Trustee Greg Silva and a 7-0 vote of the board.
Before the vote, Stewart told the trustees she had enjoyed open communication with the district during the past couple of weeks. She also agreed to comply with some recommended conditions, which she described as more “clarification and technicalities than substance.”
Stewart noted that the district had asked the charter school to reword some school documentation. Two examples were changing a statement about the right to seek other special education services to say the school would not seek other special education services and changing a paragraph about the annual student lottery to use the word “preferences” rather than “exemptions.”
Stewart said TLC had done some research on the cost of moving Millennium to Tracy Outlets, 1005 E. Pescadero Ave., but that is no longer a feasible option.
“The move became financially out of our reach,” she said.
In addition to the money needed to convert storefronts into a school facility, she said they were looking at a $1.8 million cost just to meet fire codes.
“We spent $60,000 to see if it would be possible for us,” she said. “We just can’t do it.”
Trustee Ted Guzman thanked the school’s charter board and had each member stand and be recognized among the more than 50 students and employees attending the meeting Tuesday.
He said Millennium was running a great program and the district looked forward to working together.
The next charter up for renewal on the Tracy Learning Center campus is Primary Charter School, Stewart said. She expects a presentation asking for the kindergarten-to-fourth-grade charter renewal to go before the board Feb. 25.
