Delta Charter High juniors Drammel Pitts and Marcus Anderson led their team to a 67-63 Mountain Valley League win over the visiting Lodi Academy Titans on Tuesday, Jan. 21, at the Teranishi Events Center.
The Dragons (12-5, 4-2 MVL) held the lead the entire game against the Titans (5-10, 2-3 MVL).
Pitts, the Dragons’ point guard, hit three 3-point shots in the first quarter, while Anderson, a 6-foot-5 center, dominated the inside, scoring 10 points in the first and collecting 20 rebounds for the night.
Delta Charter’s early lead made the difference as both teams went on scoring runs. Delta Charter was ahead by 18 points late in the third quarter, but by the early fourth quarter, Lodi Academy was back within four points.
“They brought intensity,” Anderson said. “We knew it wasn’t going to be an easy game. All we had to do was execute.”
The Titans cut the Dragons’ lead to 64-63 in the final minutes, but Delta Charter got back a comfortable lead when a series of fouls allowed Pitts and Anderson to score from the free throw line.
Pitts scored 36 points in the game, including six 3-point shots. Anderson contributed 27 total points.
The Dragons are aiming to make up for a couple of early league defeats in their drive for a repeat MVL title.
“If we keep playing like this, we’ll be in good shape for the rest of the year,” Pitts said.
Anderson was confident that the team could overcome those losses.
“It’s not how you fall, but how you come back that really matters,” he said, “so that’s what we’ve got to do — come back hard.”
Kimball 73, Sonora 53
After a close first half, the Jaguars seized control on their home court against the Sonora High Wildcats on Tuesday.
Sonora cut Kimball’s initial lead to 28-25 at the half. But the Jaguars (13-5, 3-2 Valley Oak League) consistently outscored the Wildcats (7-10, 1-5 VOL) in the second half for the win.
Leading the way were seniors Bryer Peet and J.D. Schmidt with 12 points each, Peet’s on four 3-pointers. Senior Jonah Laguana added 10 points.
Millennium 70, Big Valley Christian 41
Most of the players on the Millennium High Falcons roster contributed to a Central California Athletic Alliance victory against the Big Valley Christian High Lions on Monday, Jan. 20, at Tracy High.
Senior guard Derritt Scarver led the way with 22 points and 13 rebounds as the Falcons (4-10, 1-1 CCAA) took off for a 42-19 lead at the half.
In the third quarter, the Millennium defense limited the Lions (7-6, 0-2 CCAA) to one field goal.
Scarver said that in contrast to the Falcons’ 60-48 loss to Elliot Christian on Friday, Jan. 17, Monday’s game was one where everything worked right.
“We just hit our shots,” Scarver said. “Against Elliot, we came out strong but didn’t finish. This game, we came out hard all four quarters, so that’s always good.”
He considered it good preparation for Millennium’s game against Brookside Christian on Friday, Jan. 24, another key league matchup.
“We know to expect pressure, and that’s what we’ll prepare for in practice all week,” Scarver said.
Also leading the Falcons effort on Monday were senior Marques Shanks (13 points, nine rebounds) and junior Jordan DeWitt and sophomore Jordan Johnson (11 points each).
Ben Holt Academy 82, Delta Charter 47
The Ben Holt College Prep Academy Bobcats outplayed the Delta Charter High Dragons early on Friday in Stockton and handed the visitors a Mountain Valley League loss.
The Bobcats led 35-13 at the end of the first quarter. The Dragons put up a better defense during the rest of the game but were unable to close the gap.
