Three local girls basketball teams are playing in the 30th annual Tom Hawkins-Tracy Breakfast Lions Girls Basketball Tournament at Tracy and West high schools.

Games started Thursday, Dec. 26, and continue Friday and Saturday at both schools. The final games will be played Monday, Dec. 30, at Tracy High.

The tournament was founded in 1983 by the late Tom Hawkins, who was principal-superintendent and basketball coach at Jefferson School, a longtime trustee of Tracy Unified School District and an active member of the Tracy Breakfast Lions.

The 17 teams playing this year include 12 returning teams. Absent is two-time tournament champion Brookside Christian High of Stockton.

Among the newcomers are the Kimball High Jaguars (6-1). Kimball faced off against the McNair High Eagles (7-0), also new to the Hawkins Tournament, on Thursday.

Tracy High (3-3) played the Johansen High Vikings (0-5) of Modesto in the opening game. The Bulldogs went 2-2 in the 2012 tournament.

West High (2-8) opened against the Riverbank High Bruins (7-1). West, which went 1-3 in last year’s tournament, automatically moved to the winners bracket as Riverbank was unable to play Friday and was replaced by the Excel Academy Pumas (6-2) of Stockton.

Returning are the Patterson High Tigers (8-3), who finished last year’s tournament with an 82-34 loss to Brookside in the final game and went on to win the 2012-13 Western Athletic Conference title.

Also back are the Gregori Jaguars (7-3), who beat Tracy 45-41 in the third-place game and finished their 2012-13 season as champions of the Modesto Metro Conference.

The Napa High Indians (10-0) return a year after winning the 2012 consolation-bracket trophy. Napa High, which won its own Wine Valley Tournament title last weekend, is a regular at the Hawkins tournament and was the 2009 champion.

Other returning teams are the Manteca High Buffaloes (2-5), the 2012 Valley Oak League champions, and the East Union High Lancers (3-2), Lathrop High Spartans (2-5), Mission San Jose High Warriors (5-2) of Fremont, Mills High Vikings (4-4) of Millbrae, Modesto High Panthers (0-4) and Tokay High Tigers (1-6).
