Last week’s Remember When mystery photo, above, shows a Marine gunnery sergeant and Gene Birk with one of the barrels collecting toys for the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots project.

Birk, a former Marine, headed the local Toys for Tots campaign for several years in the 1970s before merging it with the Brighter Christmas project of Good Samaritan Community Services.

Birk led Brighter Christmas for 30 years before retiring in 2009. Although no longer director of Brighter Christmas, he is still active in fundraising to provide food and toys to Tracy area families.

Recognizing him in the photo were Lon Sparger, Frank Gonzales, Bill Kaska, Lisa Fornasero, Alma Lopez and Liz White.

Today’s Remember When mystery photo, at top, shows a business window decorated for the holidays in 1976. What is the business, and what did the window win?
