At least one local team will play for the Tracy/West Winter Holiday Boys Basketball Classic tournament title after Tracy, West and Kimball all won their first-round games.

The tournament was reduced to eight teams this year from the usual 16, with games on Thursday evening, Dec. 12, and again on Friday evening, Dec. 13, at West and Tracy high schools. Games will continue Saturday afternoon, Dec. 14, with the championship match at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Also winning on Thursday was Castlemont High of Oakland, with a 51-45 win over Johansen of Modesto

Tracy 70, Lathrop 50

The Bulldogs (5-1) got off to a sluggish start, scoring just six points in the first quarter while Lathrop ((3-1) scored 10 on Thursday at Tracy High’s Bill Swenson Gymnasium. Teams began to hit their shots in the second quarter, and Tracy broke loose in the second half to score 24 points in the third and 25 more in the fourth.

Junior guard Druce Asah said Bulldog coach Junior Cueva told the team to tighten up its defense in the second half.

“That’s what the difference was. Hit first and then hit last,” Asah said. “He said the first team that wins the first five minutes of the half is the team that comes out with the victory.”

Asah scored 24 points, including three 3-point field goals, and senior center Josh Brakkee was the game’s scoring leader with 26 points and he also pulled in 12 rebounds, and junior guard Khareym Watson scored 12 points.

Kimball 83, Modesto 61

The Jaguars (7-1) brought solid shooting and defense to the court at West High’s Steve Thornton Gymnasium on Thursday, taking a 30-13 lead over Modesto (1-5) at the end of the first quarter.

Senior guard Jonah Laguana scored 10 points in the first quarter and 16 for the night, and senior guard Ben Juarez tossed in 21 points. By the fourth quarter Kimball coach Joe Lawrence gave the team’s starters a rest, and 12 of the 14 players on the Kimball roster contributed to the Jaguars’ final score.

West 79, Pacheco 57

The Wolf Pack (5-1) took control of the first half for a 46-24 lead over Pacheco (1-4) going into the third quarter.

“We had some very good play and times we didn’t play well. Everybody got to play and it was a pretty balanced team effort,” Coach Derek Sprecksel said. “It’s a typical early season game.”

Senior forward Alvin Crenshaw scored 16 points, including 11 in the first half, senior guard Kenneth Daye scored 15 and senior guard Kenneth Thompson scored 11.
