For some local community members who have relatives affected by Typhoon Haiyan, including Mountain House resident Trisha Mae Coyoca, the disaster hits home.
“My family comes from the Philippines, and we were just there over the summer,” Coyoca said. “Many of their homes and farmland were destroyed. You see the newscasts and the devastation and it’s hard to see.”
Local efforts are being made to collect supplies for victims of the typhoon. Mountain House Youth Basketball is accepting donations during its Saturday game days at Questa School, 685 N. Montebello St.
A table will be set up in the gym from 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. this Saturday, Nov. 23, and the first three Saturdays in December.
All donations will be collected weekly and given to the National Alliance for Filipino Concerns’ Bay Area Taskforce Haiyan.
“I think this is a great way to help get needed supplies,” Coyoca said. “Having people come together and seeing the support for family and friends has been overwhelming. Every donation helps.”
The group is asking for first-aid kits, solar lamps, clothing, canned food, beef jerky and boxes.
