Cross-Country: Kimball senior takes second at league meet

Kimball High senior Francesca Loayza placed second overall among 38 girls at the Valley Oak League cross-country championship meet on Tuesday, Oct. 29, at Tuolumne Regional Park in Modesto.

Loayza ran the 5K course in 19 minutes, 25 seconds. She was the only runner from Kimball in the varsity girls competition.

Manteca was the winner of the team competition with 37 points, followed by Sierra with 39.

Kimball’s varsity boys placed fourth with a score of 147, while Manteca (31) took first and Sierra (52) finished second.

Junior Fernando Carrasco (18:29), and seniors Giovanni Miranda (18:48), Taylor Bosch (19:15), Greg Dawson (19:26) and Eduardo Calderon (19:44) all ran for Kimball.

The Jaguars also had the individual league champion, Kyli Huynh (13:13), and runner-up, Jessica Kwan (13:27) in the freshman-sophomore girls 2-mile race.

SJAA championships

Tracy High junior Kaitlin Spencer was the Bulldogs’ top runner with her third-place overall finish at the San Joaquin Athletic Association championship meet on Oct. 24 at Lodi Lake.

Spencer ran the 5K course in 20 minutes, 31 seconds while senior Ellie Fisher (20:51) arrived seventh.

They led the Tracy team to a third-place score of 75, behind first-place Lodi (25) and second-place Lincoln (62).

Completing Tracy’s team were sophomore Sonia Reddy (23:21), sophomore Emily Simons (23:31) and senior Kaeli Vierra (23:31).

Leading Tracy’s varsity boys was senior Alfonso Gonzalez (18:02), who finished 13th overall. Tracy’s team score was 93.

First-place Lincoln (27) and second-place Lodi (34) dominated the race with nine of the top-10 places between them.

Tracy’s team also included junior Evan Savage (18:20), and seniors Chris Garcia (18:33), Andrew Canlas (18:39) and Derek Paris (19:45).

Tracy’s girls also finished at 4-1 in SJAA dual meets this year, and the varsity boys went 2-3 in SJAA duals.
