Bessie Portlock, 89, a longtime Tracy resident, died Friday, Oct. 11, at Tracy Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. Services will be private.

Born Jan. 1, 1924, in Moberly, Texas, Mrs. Portlock had lived in Tracy 74 years. She worked 35 years in agriculture alongside her husband. She was also a former member of the San Joaquin River Club.

Survivors include three stepchildren, Terry Portlock, and his wife, Fauna, of Livermore, Colo., Tim Portlock, and his wife, Rosalyn, of Hemet and Caroline Portlock of Upland; and five grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her husband of 42 years, Clarence A. Portlock, who died in 2000; and eight siblings, Virgil Gaines, Stella Bee Harris, Curtis Gaines, Joe Gaines, Wesley “Doc” Gaines, Henry Gaines, Sara Morgan and Thelma Barnes.

Burial will be in San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Gustine. Hotchkiss Mortuary, 5 W. Highland Ave., is handling arrangements.

Contributions in Mrs. Portlock’s name may be sent to the American Cancer Society, 207 E. Alpine Ave., in Stockton.
