Five Tracy triathletes proved their mettle by finishing the inaugural Ironman Lake Tahoe race on Sept. 22.

The Ironman website listed 2,751 racers who started the 140.6-mile triathlon, which comprised a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike race and a full marathon, 26.2 miles.

Cody Ross, the fastest local finisher, completed the race in 12 hours, 43:40 minutes.

Ross said the course was frozen, as a snowstorm had passed over the Sierra before the race.

He said the frigid morning meant the waters of Lake Tahoe were warmer than the air, which cost some racers time during the transition to their bicycles as they donned extra layers of clothing, including parkas.

Other Tracy residents who competed were Ron Harvey, who finished in 13:43:43; Jamie Ulloa, 15:31:00; Eldred Fountain, 16:24:13; and Chad Wood, 16:44:02.

The winner was Chris McDonald of Austin, Texas, who finished the race in 8:55:14.
