According to the National Merit Scholarship Corp., a privately funded not-for-profit organization, about 8,000 college-bound students representing every state in the nation are given $2,500 scholarships each year.
This year, two students from West High School, Barak Nehoran and Luke Reed; two from Tracy High School, Inyoung Hong and Aditya Dutta Gupta; and one from Kimball High School, Abhisek Singh, were announced Sept. 11 as semifinalists in the competition.
Students awarded a National Merit Scholarship are judged to have strong extracurricular achievements, high academic skills, high PSAT scores and great potential for university success.
Since the program was established in 1955, National Merit Scholars have included technology pioneer Bill Gates, Amazon.com Inc. founder Jeff Bezos, actress and Internet entrepreneur Felicia Day, former U.S. Secretary of Labor Robert Reich and Federal Reserve Bank chairman Ben Bernanke.
