Bulldogs beat Wolf Pack

Tracy High’s volleyball team charged into the 2013 season with a 3-1 win over visiting West High on Thursday, Sept. 5.

The Bulldogs started off dominant and had to hold tough after the Wolf Pack regained its footing in the second set. Scores were 25-10, 26-28, 25-16, 25-21 inTracy’s favor.

“It’s always nice beating a crosstown rival,” Tracy junior Michelle Laiolo said. “West is good competition for us. It was like a milestone for us.”

It was the first match of the year forTracy, and the first loss for West (2-1).

West sophomore Kaylah London said that in spite of a slow start the Wolf Pack held up well against its crosstown rival.

“We didn’t give up,” London said. “We were strong on the blocking. Our front row was strong. Our defense was strong. I thought we did pretty good.”

With Laiolo at the service line to start off the matchTracytook a 9-0 lead right away in the first set, including three of Laiolo’s 10 aces for the night.

West took an early advantage in the second set with shots from London and senior Merinesa Saaga. Tracy caught up with junior Jillian Bessette at the service line and senior Jenna Wesely at the net. Wesely totaled 12 kills for the night.

“I think our passing was probably our strongest thing,” Wesely said. “Our setters were on point. Our setters were calling out plays.”

West took the lead again with junior Kate Bell serving andTracykept it close with shots from Grace Murphy, who totaled eight kills, at the end.

The third set was close until Tracy pulled ahead with junior Mika Fithian serving and Murphy and junior Melanie Balaban at the net. The fourth stayed close all the way through, with Tracy finally pulling away with Murphy at the service line.

Tracy’s sophomore beat West in three with scores of 25-12, 13-25, 15-13 and four aces each from Hannah Presely and Chelsey Eddy, and Tracy also won the freshman match 25-14, 25-13..
