Last week’s Remember When mystery photo, at right, showed Tracy Police Department juvenile officer Ken Firth and 10-year-old Larry Brown promoting safety as the 1957 school year began.

Larry Brown was identified in the photo by his sister, Maurine Castro. She reported that her brother, now turning 67 years of age, lives in Ridgecrest.

Maurine and Larry are children of W.E. “Brownie” Brown, a former Tracy mayor for whom the section of Interstate 580 south of town is named.

This week’s Remember When mystery photo, at top, shows a Tracy public official dialing up a coast-to-coast telephone call in February 1956. Who was the official, and what was the occasion? Who else is pictured in the photo?
