The families of a slain 8-year-old girl and the woman suspected of killing her struggled to cope Easter Sunday as the shaken father of the suspect described his daughter as a loving mother who cared deeply about children.

The family of the suspect — 28-year-old Sunday school teacher Melissa Huckaby — held Easter services today at the church just down the road from the mobile home park where Sandra Cantu was last seen.

Huckaby remained in custody today at the San Joaquin County Jail. She was being held without bail on suspicion of murder and kidnapping.

Huckaby's father, 48-year-old Brian Lawless of Cypress, said he did not believe his daughter was capable of what police accuse her of doing.

"I just can't comprehend. There are no words," he told reporters outside Clover Road Baptist Church.

Cantu's body was found stuffed in a suitcase in an irrigation pond this past Monday. Police and federal agents scoured the church and its grounds for clues after the discovery.

Lawless said Huckaby lived for her 5-year-old daughter, Madison.

"She just always had an extra patience with her," Lawless said. "Never raised her voice. Never yelled. Never struck her. She was that same way with other children. She loved other children."

He said Madison played often with Sandra, who lived down the street from where Huckaby lived with her grandfather, Clifford Lawless, the church's pastor.

Sandra's uncle, Joe Chavez, said the arrest of his sister's neighbor had allowed some of his rage toward Huckaby's family to surface.

"I want to go over there and beat the crap out of those people, but I'm not going to do that," he said as he stood at the entrance to the mobile home park where the little girl lived with her mother. "I just want to vent my anger, but it's not in me."

Police and community members are still coming to grips today with Huckaby's arrest.

"I was in shock that, number one, it was a woman and, number two, a member of our community," Tracy police spokesman Sgt. Tony Sheneman said.

About 400 parishioners, including members of the Cantu family, packed into the cafeteria of a local high school to hear Journey Christian Church Pastor Scott McFarland's Easter sermon.

Journey was one of more than a dozen local churches that mobilized its members today to pray and fast for the Cantu family. McFarland sent a special message to the Cantu family that, like Christ, Sandra's spirit had risen to heaven.

"Jesus is out of the tomb, and Sandra is too," McFarland said after the sermon. "She's not in a grave; she's not in a suitcase. She's in heaven and celebrating the best Easter ever."

Sandra disappeared on March 27 and hundreds of volunteers and law enforcement officials turned out to search for the girl with dark brown eyes and light brown hair. Police said they received 1,500 tips in the hunt for Sandra and her killer.

Huckaby had attended the second of the several vigils for the slain girl, Sheneman said.

On April 6, farmworkers draining an irrigation pond found the suitcase. Police said autopsy results are not yet available, and they declined to say whether investigators believe the slaying was accidental or deliberate.

Sheneman said investigators have no motive for the slaying. Police declined to say where or how the girl was allegedly killed, though investigators said they believed she died very soon after she was last seen.

Inconsistencies in Huckaby's story led to her arrest, Sheneman said. She was arrested about five hours after she drove herself to the local police station at the request of officers.

She was being held without bail for an arraignment Tuesday.

Huckaby's uncle, John Hughes Jr. of Whittier, told The Associated Press his niece was from a good home but had hit a rough patch in her life and had moved in with her grandparents in Tracy to get past her troubles.

"They opened their home up to her to try to get her life back on track," Hughes said. "I think a lot of families have problems like that."

Huckaby grew up in Orange County and was a "pretty normal kid," he said. As the eldest of nine grandchildren, she played "mother hen" to the younger children when the family got together for the holidays.

After graduating from high school, Huckaby's path appears to have become rockier. She married, had a daughter and was divorced in a few short years. She had difficulty finding and keeping a job, partly owing to the challenges of single motherhood, Hughes said.

"She's had her struggles," he said. "But there's no way (her grandparents) or anybody would be fearful that anything this horrifying could possibly come from that."

Huckaby is scheduled to appear in court this Friday to check in with a county mental health program as part of a three-year probation sentence for a petty theft charge to which she pleaded no contest.

It was not immediately clear if Huckaby had hired an attorney to speak for her.

Huckaby had worked for four years as a checker at a Food for Less grocery store on Tracy Boulevard just east of the mobile park, until she was fired sometime in 2004, said Matt Duncan, an assistant manager at the store now known as FoodMaxx.

"I wouldn't have anything bad to say about her, until now," said Duncan, who has worked at the store off-and-on for about 10 years. "I would've never suspected her to do something like this."

Ask our police department to release the names of the "Tracy 60" or arrest them. As parents we need to know who to protect our children from. child porn is dangerous and should not be in our neighborhoods.

It's very ODD that suspect Melissa Huckaby hasn't yet been assigned an attorney during all of this process -- a public defender or other attorney. There must obviously have been evidence to detain and charge her, but something is fishy here,

and it makes one wonder WHAT ELSE IS BEING COVERED UP ?

WHO ELSE COLLUDED IN THIS CRIME AND SUBSEQUENT COVER-UP

-- and what connections do they have to Huckaby, the church,

pornography and drugs ???

FTUD is right. The innocent Melissa Huckaby did graduate from West High and the arrested Melissa Lawless Huckaby apparently graduated from a school in Brea, Ca. per Blink On Crime. Unfortunately, the innocent MH may have to drop the H for a while. Does that make sense to anyone else? What a nightmare this whole mess is.

Heaven help us all.

KCatonline,

I think you misunderstood my comment. The media using the wrong photo of another Melissa Huckaby happened more than a few days ago. I was only mentioning this to Mommyluv who asked if there were websites commenting on news media using the wrong photo.

You are correct that Tracy Press and other news media "now" are using the correct photo of the suspect Melissa Huckaby.

fedupmom must know the innocent Melissa Huckaby as well as I do when she said the MH we know still looks "sweet and innocent". That's the Missy we know!

The Tracy Police Dept. should keep investigating the total scenario...

(Church caretaker) FRED WILLIAMS should be investigated more thoroughly, in terms of his role & possible collusion --

Fred Williams deliberately

LIED ABOUT THE SUITCASE last week,

saying that it was being moved for a (bogus B.S.)

church 'rummage sale'.

There are other anomalies involving FRED WILLIAMS, and he should be brought to the Tracy police station for questioning about his connections with Melissa Huckaby & with the church.

Also, how does Fred Williams earn money and afford a large home in Lathrop -- where does his money come from ?

There is absolutely 2 Melissa Huckaby's in Tracy!! I attended High school with the innocent Melissa and she is not the woman pictured with dark hair. She is blonde and looks nothing similar to the sicko. I located her on myspace to see if she still looked the same as 11 years ago and she did. Sweet and innocent. Not like the dark haired psycho Melissa. Please dont confuse the two. I truly sympathize for innocent Melissa.

To:-- forthunderdog> You say, "People from back east have seen the wrong Huckaby and have emailed threats, tv stations have been calling her home asking questions, and newspaper media have been knocking on her door."

No dog, we have satelite and it is coming from CNN connected to HLN Headline News. This is not our local stations, this is the National News reporting.

So, we are not getting the wrong Huckaby. They are showing MH's photo there in Tracy at the Mobile Home Park with Jennifer Wadsworth reporting.

I see that TP has now added the same report that i also saw when i went to the KCRA website.

http://www.kcra.com/news/19169067/detail.htm

We are up to date here and i am staying with the TP and your local news updates to be sure i don't give out wrong info.

Thank you for checking.

Looking at this family parading in their little easter outfits acting all high and mighty makes me want to puke! WEIRD! I would be so depressed if my daughter did something like this monster did, I wouldn't show my face! I would be so depressed! Easter outfits would be the last thing on my mind! I hope this bitch dies a slow and horrible death in prison! If anyone else was involved I hope we find out! This is a weird bunch!

Read down a ways to get to the paragraph stating the FOX photo was the wrong one.

These are the websites that I could find that mentioned that the wrong Melissa Huckaby's photo was posted.

Mommyluv,

Yep, there are two Melissa Huckaby's and both different as night-and-day. I don't know if there is a website that talks about the Melissa Huckaby I know. I have heard from her family that Chan 2/KTVU in Oakland ran the photo of the innocent Huckaby on their website. This is a FOX broadcasting station. People from back east have seen the wrong Huckaby and have emailed threats, tv stations have been calling her home asking questions, and newspaper media have been knocking on her door.

Some media have been writing that the suspect Huckaby graduated from West HS but I read in other publications that the suspect Huckaby is reported to have gone to high school and graduated in Brea, CA.

The only similarity between the two appear to be their names and they both live in San Joaquin County.

People should know that the suspect Huckaby is in jail but the innocent Huckaby may as well be also because she's afraid of who has seen her photo and may think she may be responible for Sandra Cantu.

Where was Huckaby's daughter when this happened, I read that the day after Sandra was missing that Huckaby's daughter went on a trip with a family member...Could they be trying to manipulate what she says (brainwash), so when they bring her home she doesn't know anything...Surely detectives will question the 5 year daughter...This foul piece of crap should have a very slow and painful death in prison! This whole Lawless family is just weird to me! How could they hold services in that place ever again! Just plain WEIRD!

I haven't read too many of the posts since early this morning, but i just heard on HLN that the prosecution is going to have rape and molestation charges soon.

If anyone knows anymore about this, could you enlighten me? I would not feel right if this is false information. Although it did come from Live HLN news on the East Coast time 430 PM ET.

Wow, again another crushing blow to my heart. So, if this is true i won't be surprised when the autopsy report is released.

Lord be with the Cantu family and extended family, friends as we prepare for more information.
