World-class handball players, ranging from youths to experienced veterans, will compete in Tracy on July 27 and 28.

The second tournament in the four-tourney second annual World Players of Handball Series will be played on the 12 handball courts at West High School, according to Angel Hernandez, a professional handball player who is a native of Tracy.

“The first tournament of the series was held last week at Venice Beach in Southern California, and the Tracy tournament will be the second — and the only Northern California tournament,” he reported.

Hernandez, who has organized a number of handball tournament in Tracy’s McDonald Park in recent years, said many of the top players in the nation will compete in the Tracy tournament.

“I played in the Venice Beach tournament, and most of the professionals there said they would be in Tracy July 27 and 28,” he said. “The level of play should be outstanding.”

Competition at the West High courts will begin both mornings at 8 a.m. and continue through the day to 8 p.m., said Hernandez, a Tracy native who now lives in Stockton.

Adult competition will be in men’s singles and doubles, women’s singles and doubles and men’s masters. The men’s singles champion in the professional division will receive $1,600.

Youth competition for both boys and girls will be in singles for 11 and under, 15 and under and 18 and under.

Hernandez said the West High courts were selected for the tournament because of their three-wall structure and capacity of 12 courts.

“The school district has been very cooperative in approving the tournament and making the West High facilities available,” he said. “Tracy will be on the handball map.”

After the July 27-28 Tracy tournament, competition will return to Southern California for a Los Angeles tournament in August and then wind up the series Sept. 19-22 in Las Vegas for the second annual World Players of Handball series championship.
