Though high school football teams start spring and summer workouts next week, it could still be a month or more before West High has a new football coach.

Tracy Unified School District must replace outgoing West football coach Matt Loggins, who transferred to Kimball High to lead the Jaguars football program.

West interim Principal Troy Brown expects the football team’s spring and summer workouts will begin as scheduled the first week of May despite the absence of a permanent coach.

“We’ll ask some of the guys already in the program to head it up,” Brown said.

Brown expects West’s new athletic director will be hired first and will help interview football coach candidates.

Tracy Unified School District spokeswoman Jessica Cardoza interviews for the athletic director position took place this week, and confirmed applications for the coaching position have been received.

Cardoza would not say how many people have applied for the jobs.

Loggins said he intends to stay on as West’s athletic director until a new person is hired, and will help the new athletic director transition into the job.

The TUSD board of trustees must approve selections for both positions. The athletic director vote is expected to appear on the May 14 board meeting agenda if the selection committee makes its recommendation to the district human resources department by Friday, May 3.

The earliest that a new coach would be hired is during the board meeting on May 28.

I hope this gets figured out quick for the kids sake. Speaking from experience you need a staff with the right approach and that can gel together.

On a side note, I hear millennium is starting a JV team this year, and they have a player in the national game in Austin this year.
