A northern Tracy home caught fire Tuesday, April 8, when the embers of papers being burned inside the fireplace floated out of the chimney and landed on the roof.

The resident was inside burning the papers when the fire started above the home’s garage around 5:20 p.m., according to Andy Kellogg, division chief for the Tracy Fire Department.

A person who was driving past the home, located at 12400 W. Larch Road, saw the flames and knocked on the front door of the home to alert the resident, Kellogg said.

“The homeowner got up on the roof and tried to put out the flames using the garden hose,” Kellogg said. “I think he was up there for a couple minutes before he called us.”

The chimney firewall prevented the flames from spreading to the rest of the home, according to Kellogg.

Damage was estimated at $20,000, and the home was still inhabitable, Kellogg said.

“I think the homeowner is a contractor, and he plans on putting in some extra supports to make sure nothing collapses,” he said.

Tracy police received 142 calls for service Tuesday, April 9. The following is a sample of those reports.

8:15 a.m.: Officers arrested a 28-year-old who was allegedly at the Tracy Skate Park, 299 W. Grant Line Road, using drugs. The man ran to the nearby Heritage Place Retirement Home where police arrested him on the third floor of the residence. He had several outstanding warrants for public intoxication, resisting arrest and making death threats.

12:55 p.m.: Several teenagers were reportedly seen with golf clubs and golf balls on the railroad tracks near the 1400 block of West 11th Street. They were allegedly playing on the tracks, but were gone when police arrived.

8:30 p.m.: Police arrested a 19-year-old man who ran from officers while they were responding to a verbal argument on the 3400 block of North MacArthur Drive. The man was allegedly arguing with a female inside of a vehicle when police arrived. He allegedly ran toward the Tracy Outlets and was stopped at gunpoint in a median on North MacArthur Drive. Officers also discovered the man had an outstanding warrant from Stockton.
