The Gordon and Anthea Wells Memorial Scholarships were presented last week during the All-District Musical Festival in the West High gymnasium.
The scholarships, established by two retired Tracy teachers and supported by Tracy Friends of the Stockton Symphony, provide funds for the students either to pay for individual classes or to purchase instruments.
This year’s Wells scholarship winners are:
• Ashley Flores, a flutist with the North School band. An eighth-grader, she began playing flute in the fifth grade and “had demonstrated dedication and discipline,” according to her teacher Mark Williams. Ashley was selected for the Tracy Honor Band, he reported.
• Saul Virgen, a seventh-grader at Freiler School, where he plays drums in the school band.
“He is a leader and often works with other band members to improve their skills,” said Lori Yates, music instructor at Freiler.
• Cameron Estrada, an eighth-grader at Kelly School. He is in his fifth year in the music program and his fourth year playing alto saxophone. He has played in the district honor band the past two years.
“Cameron is a hard worker and is always ready to help the novice saxophone students in his section,” said Celia Rosemblum-Stime, music instructor at Kelly.
• Dylan Gathings of Monte Vista Middle School, who — although he started to play trumpet only this year after moving from Stockton — has learned quickly. He plays in the after-school jazz band and was selected to the San Joaquin County Honor Band.
“Dylan is a great example of hard work and perserverance paying off, and he has made all of Monte Vista proud this year,” said his teacher, Randy McMillan.
• Colby Leiske, a Monte Vista eighth-grader, who plays tenor saxophone in the school band. He has been in the band for three years and “has grown into a mature and talented performer,” reported his teacher, Dave Villa.
“Colby is always upbeat and pleasant in class and has become a student leader and prime example for his class,” Villa said.
