Senior Jai Miles was awarded a silver medal in mathematics and a bronze medal in economics, senior Nicholas Vaishampayan won a bronze medal for essay writing and junior Yuvraj “Robby” Grewal received a participation medal as the top overall individual scorer on the Tracy High team.
The team failed to place high enough as a group, and will not advance to the national competition in Minneapolis, Minnesota on April 25-27.
After receiving first-place team honors for the third year in a row at the county level on Feb. 6, coach Terri Sorgent said she was “kind of surprised” that the team didn’t qualify for the nationals.
Like the county contest, the state decathlon was based on the topic of Russia.
Sorgent thought the team’s overall score fell by 3,000 points because the state-level tests are significantly harder than previous events.
“The competition was tough,” Sorgent said. “They enjoyed the experience and had fun meeting other kids doing the same things.”
Grewal — a starter at the county and state contests — also felt the difficulty of the state level was “really, really tough.”
“Some teams are really committed — it’s really intense,” he said. “As a team, I think we did OK. There’s always room for improvement.”
The team is going to have to rebuild after this year because seven of its nine team members are graduating seniors.
“We’re looking for people who want to compete,” said Grewal, a rising senior. “Next year we’ll be trying to put a team together that can do better than this year — try to constantly improve.”
Sorgent said she has already started preparing remaining team members for next year’s competitions by reviewing study material and preparing speeches. The topic will be on World War I.
