For the first time in several years, local nonprofits will try to spread the word about their good works during the Day of Caring from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 9, at the West Valley Mall, 3200 Naglee Road.

The United Way Tracy Community Council is hosting the event, which is returning after a five-year hiatus, according to council co-President Ted Guzman.

But the spark was reignited, he said, when West Valley Mall manager Mike Donaghy volunteered the mall as a venue.

“They’re really are being helpful in community involvement,” Guzman said. “Not just United Way, but other groups, too.”

Nonprofits — including Tracy Interfaith Ministries, McHenry House Tracy Family Shelter, the Tracy Boys & Girls Clubs and others — were quick to join the event designed to make local residents aware of the services that surround them, Guzman said.

“Lots of times, they’re not able to get out into the community like they’d like to,” he said, “and this is a way to do that and network with people who maybe don’t even know they’re in the community.”

It’s a chance for the various organizations to give as well as receive.

Guzman said the nonprofits also hope to bring in volunteers and donations.

In addition to the nonprofit presence, the Day of Caring includes a raffle and entertainment from local musicians and dancers.
