Against a small Edison team the wrestlers from Tracy High still got in a couple good contests to win their second match of the season.
Tracy’s 66-17 score reflects 11 wins in 14 matches, with Bulldog wrestlers winning six matches by pins and five by forfeit. It’s the first win for the Bulldogs in a dual match this season, having lost 38-34 at Tokay on Tuesday.
Tracy coach Darryl Rond said his team went into the match knowing that Edison is short-handed this year, but a couple of varsity team members had tough matches against Viking wrestlers.
In the 145-pound weight class junior Zack White worked hard for his pin against the Vikings’ Bobby Christian. Christian scored a couple take-downs in the first round for a 4-2 lead in points.
White took the advantage at the start of the second round and kept it. He scored on an escape and then took a 5-4 lead on a take down before they moved off the mat and had to restart. With the match 1 minute, 29 seconds into the second round White pinned Christian.
White said he felt confident going into Wednesday’s match. He had to lose weight for Tuesday’s match against Tokay, and after working out right before the meet he made his weight but lost the match. On Wednesday he was ready to wrestle, and also was familiar with his opponent.
“I wrestled him last year and realized he was extremely strong and had a lot of energy,” he said. “So I just got him tired and then once I got him tired I straight up took him down and pinned him.”
Tracy’s other hard-fought match was in the 152-pound class, where Marcus Arguello battled Edison’s Fernando Valle. Valle took down Arguello twice in the first round, twice in the second and a few more times in the third round, and nearly pinned him twice, but Arguello escaped each time and went the distance only to lose by a 5-26 decision.
In other matches Edison’s Emmanual Lopez pinned Tracy’s Ricardo Rodriguez 1 minute, 6 seconds into the first round in the 135-pound class. Edison also won the 140 class by forfeit.
Tracy won its other matches, including: Bailey Barnes, 160 pounds, pinned Sara Arguella in 1:01; Tyler Huckaby, 171, beat Alex Flores by pin in 54 seconds; Travis Nunez, 215, beat Gerald Guadan by pin in 1:56; Chad Fraga, 285, pinned Thomas Solis in 3:50; and Daniel Nunez, 125, pinned Ryan Cosgrove in 1:28.
In the junior varsity division Tracy won 57-6. Jerry Sillivan (152) won his match 11-7, Sal Salinas (171) won by pin in 2:31, Terence Macias (285) won by pin in 1:05, Alex Hernandez (112) won by pin in 2:21, Manuel Gamez (119) won by pin in 24 seconds, and Danielle Rond (130) won by pin in 1:26. Tracy’s only loss was in the 160 pound class, where Edison’s Ruben Rubalcava beat Kendrick Bergmann by pin in 5:11. Edison forfeited all of the other matches.
