Tracy High’s tennis team came two games away from a share of the league title on Thursday at Tracy High, and ended up losing three of five matches against undefeated Lodi.

The Tracy doubles team of Madeline Geibig, a sophomore, and Kelsey Blanc, a freshman, went all three sets against Katie Weeks and Anastasia Gonzales of Lodi, and in a tiebreaker on the third set, Weeks and Gonzales edged out the Tracy team, 7-5.

Tracy coach Paul Demsher said the last match went until dark and was the highlight of the afternoon as it ended up deciding the outcome of the final team match of the San Joaquin Athletic Association season.

"It was an exciting match. My girls played really well, and we were right there," he said.

It was a rematch of their Oct. 7 meeting, when Wells and Gonzalez beat Geibig and Blanc in straight sets. On that day, Lodi won four of five matches.

Tracy finishes the season at 8-2 — second place to 10-0 Lodi.

Tracy’s second-place league finish puts the Bulldogs in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I team tournament, which begins Nov. 10. Tracy will go on the road to play the top team from the Modesto Metro Conference.

Tracy’s top singles and doubles players will play in the SJAA individual tournament next Thursday and Friday at Twin Arbors Athletic Club in Lodi. Demsher said he hasn’t confirmed which players will go. Last year, Corrin Geibig took second place in the singles tournament, which earned her a spot in the Sac-Joaquin Section tournament.

Tracy’s singles players won two of three matches Thursday. Corrin Geibig beat Millia Hinchman 4-6, 6-3, and won the third match by default when Hinchman had to withdraw because of illness. Geibig won their previous match on Oct. 7 in three sets, two of which were decided by tiebreakers.

Lodi’s Allison Simon beat Tracy’s Michelle Kouda 6-1, 6-1; and Tracy’s Renata Guzman beat Anna Adams of Lodi 6-4, 7-6, with a 7-5 tiebreaker in the second set. It was a rematch of their Oct. 7 match, when Adams beat Guzman 6-2, 6-1.

In the doubles Lodi’s Jackie Lord and Audrey Simon beat Ashley Ewen and Paige Noonan 6-1, 6-2; and the Lodi team of Weeks and Gonzalez beat Geibig and Blanc 6-2, 6-7 (7-4), 7-6 (7-5).

West 7, Tokay 2

West High’s tennis team ended its season with a win at Tokay on Thursday and held on to the first place tie with St. Mary’s for a share of the Tri-City Athletic League title. West finishes the season with a 9-1 record, the only loss coming against St. Mary’s on Sept. 23.

"Today’s match felt like a complete team result," coach Ben Tsukiji said.

West’s top singles players, Ilah Estrada and Gabby Ramirez, were the only West players to lose their matches on Thursday, but the team’s four other singles players won in straight sets, and all three doubles teams also won in straight sets, though one had to go to a tiebreaker in the second frame.

West qualifies for the Sac-Joaquin Section tournament on Nov. 10 and will go on the road to play the league champion from the Central California Conference. West’s top singles and doubles teams will also compete in the TCAL tournament on Thursday and Friday at Oak Park in Stockton.

In Thursday’s singles matches, Jasmin Fonseca won 6-0, 6-4; Cherie Romualdo won 6-0, 6-0; Ashley LeSage won 6-0, 6-4; and Zjanae Schnupp won 7-5, 6-0. Estrada lost her match 5-7, 6-2, 6-8; and Ramirez lost 0-6, 5-7.

Doubles teams Tuzuk Koul and Angie Juan won 6-4, 7-6 (7-5); Tiful Koul and Ashley Vergel de Dios won 6-0, 6-3; and Jessica Dabandon and Jessica Siu, in her first varsity match, won 6-3, 6-1.
