Tracy took three wins against the Franklin Yellowjackets on Thursday at Tracy High. It included a hard-fought game for the varsity boys, who are now 2-3 in the San Joaquin Athletic Association. The varsity girls are 3-2 in league. Franklin did not have a junior varsity girls team.
“Hopefully, it gives us a little momentum going into (today’s) game against West,” coach Keith Britt said.
On Wednesday, a dominant St. Mary’s team came to West High to hand defeats to all four of West’s water polo teams. West’s varsity boys and girls are each 1-4 now in the Tri-City Athletic League.
West High will host Tracy in four games tonight under the lights at the Pinkie Phillips Aquatics Center. West’s varsity boys won the last match, 13-12, on Sept. 17 and Tracy’s girls won 12-6.
Tonight’s games start at 5:30 p.m. with the junior varsity girls.
Varsity boys: Tracy 19, Franklin 14
The Tracy High water polo team ran up the score early against the Franklin Yellowjackets on Thursday at Tracy High. That gave Tracy the advantage in 19-14 win that saw aggressive play on both sides.
Tracy’s Ben Agee scored three goals in the first two minutes. The Bulldogs’ Devin Guardanapo scored six on Thursday, including two he skipped past Franklin’s defense. Additional goals from Brandon Jossey and Jay Levand made it an 8-2 game at the end of the first.
The Yellowjackets were never able to make up the deficit, and the Bulldogs were undaunted by the Franklin defense. Typical of Tracy’s play was one of Guardanapo’s shots in the middle of the third quarter, when he took control of the ball in the middle of three Franklin defenders and fired it past Franklin’s keeper.
“They’re our rivals. … We’ve always had good games together. I had to use every advantage I had,” Guardanapo said. “There’s a lot of aggression in water polo and lot of heart. You’ve got to put your whole heart into it.”
Guardanapo and Agee scored six goals each, Tyler Silva and Jossey each scored two, and Levand, Zack Jackson and Morgan Bishop each scored one.
Jake Finney blocked six shots on goal, and Guardanapo blocked three.
Varsity girls: Tracy 16, Franklin 3
Tracy’s girls kept the Yellowjackets away from the goal for most of the game, allowing just one goal in the first half compared to Tracy’s nine, and two in the second as Tracy scored seven.
Emily Due and Nicole Brown led the scoring effort for Tracy in the first half, and Lindsey Phelps ran up the score for Tracy in the third quarter. In all, Brown and Phelps scored four goals each, Due and Sahar Osmani each scored twice, and Sam Phelps, Hope Connolly and Ashley Bongiovanni each scored one.
Junior varsity boys: Tracy 10, Franklin 3
Tracy and Franklin were even at 2-2 at the half, and then Tracy started to find the goal in the third quarter. Jeremee Campbell scored twice, and Conner Sharpe, Anthony Stirling and Justin Phelps also scored in the third quarter while Franklin was held to one goal in the third and none in the fourth. Campbell scored three in all Thursday — Phelps scored twice, and Andy Levand, Timothy Taylor and Chris Morri each scored one.
West High
Varsity boys: St. Mary’s 12, West 2
St. Mary’s scored most of its goals in the first half, which is also when West managed to get past the Rams’ defense for both of its goals. Tyler Freeman scored for West in the first quarter, and Mike Jessee scored in the second.
West allowed only two goals in the third and none in the fourth.
Coach Bob Kuks said the game showed that his team is getting stronger and more capable on defense.
“You can see that when we’re playing a team like this and we stay defensively set up,” Kuks said. ‘But offensively, we’ve got to have more movement. Our guys have got to spot a fastbreak earlier, they’ve got to get their shots off quicker to catch the goalie off-guard.”
Varsity girls: St. Mary’s 12, West 1
The Rams out-swam the Wolf Pack on offensive breaks and ran up a shutout over three quarters on clear shots at the West goal. St. Mary’s denied West any clear shots on goal, and most of West’s goal attempts went high. Lauren Kuks finally got one in the net with two minutes left to go in the fourth quarter.
Coach Al Carson said the girls have reached a plateau at mid-season, where the costly mistakes show up in every game.
“They recognize the things they need to work on,” Carson said. “It’s just a matter of getting them to do it, and then just getting better.”
Junior varsity boys: St. Mary’s 10, West 3
The Rams threatened to shut down the Wolf Pack with a 7-0 lead at the half. West and St. Mary’s were even in the second half. The Wolf Pack began to score in the third quarter on two goals from Harley Affleck, and Spencer Freeman scored one for West in the fourth.
Junior varsity girls: St. Mary’s 7, Tracy 0
West’s girls couldn’t get any shots past St. Mary’s, which scored four goals in the first half, two more in the third quarter and another at the end of the fourth quarter. Carson said he expected his young players would have a tough time, but they responded well.
“They’ve shown steady improvement every game out, so we’re real pleased with that,” he said.
