EDITOR,
After nearly two years of nonstop political campaigning, I’m certain many voters feel as I do — tired of hearing both candidates speak.
The Democrats’ selection of Sen. Joe Biden, a 35-year Washington insider, did nothing but increase the depression. And I fully expected Sen. John McCain to pick another familiar face from the political scene.
What a surprise! A fresh face and the first female VP pick by the GOP. In spite of vicious attacks, reminiscent of the Robert Bork and Clarence Thomas’ ordeals, Sarah Palin more than met expectations in her acceptance speech.
But the real clincher was the prospect of finally halting the unethical practice of earmarks. Earmarks are frequently slipped into legislation without a vote on their merit. The practice is used to buy votes with public money. Democrats and Republicans are both guilty of the practice.
Campaign promises are frequently broken, but this time, McCain has vowed to veto legislation that contains earmarks. Palin has also disavowed earmarks. She will vote to back up a McCain veto, in case of a Senate tie.
I agree with McCain’s choice for vice president and a potential "president-in-waiting."
