The Millennium High School boys soccer team has a foundation of returning players that head coach Greg Thornton expects will bring the Falcons back to the Sac-Joaquin Division VII playoffs.

The Falcons came in second in the Harvest Christian League last year, their only obstacle being the league and section champs from Big Valley Christian of Modesto.

“This year, we should be able to compete with anyone in the league,” Thornton said. “A really talented group of freshmen came in, and that helps us out a lot.”

He also has 10 returning players, mostly sophomores and juniors. Team captain Jeremy McKague, the only returning senior, has been on the team since it started the year before last.

“Even when we were not in league, we played Division I teams,” he said. “We could be one of the best teams this year. Now that we’re in the league, it’s more competitive. It’s more fun and exciting.”

Thornton and assistant coach Brian Ballard, who has worked with other high school squads, travel teams and youth teams, ran the two-dozen or so soccer hopefuls through drills during the first week of school. Millennium will have just a varsity team, with a roster of 18 to 20 players.

Thornton said he figures that the team’s good showing last year helped build interest. While some athletes will be cut, it’s a good sign for the charter school that a large percentage of the students want to play.

“We’re fortunate to have a place to play and get a soccer program going,” he said. “It’s another opportunity for the kids. The school is growing.”
