Tracy High’s cheerleaders took home a collection of awards from the recent United Cheer Association summer camp at California State University, Monterey Bay.

Forty-five cheerleaders from the freshman, junior varsity and varsity squads spent four days from June 27 to 30 learning new routines and cheers for the upcoming season.

Along the way, the Tracy High Pep Squad claimed the camp’s Leadership Award. Team parent Patty Knapp said that is the most coveted award and is based on a popular vote among cheerleaders from the other schools in attendance.

The freshman team took first place for its “Home Pom” routine, which cheerleaders had practiced before the camp, and was voted “Most Improved” by UCA staff. Individual freshmen named UCA All-Stars were Carly Malcomson and Kaylee Pombo.

The junior varsity squad earned second for Home Pom, and second for their “Extreme Routine,” a dance and stunt routine the girls learned at the camp. Sophomore Jasmine Ghorboni was named a UCA All-Star.

The varsity squad took second in Home Pom, second in Extreme Routine, and second in “Camp Champs,” which is a cheer routine they learned at camp. UCA staff named them as a Superior Squad. Individual members Lauren Knapp, Brittany Butcher, Mariah Soares and Ashley Griffin were all named UCA All-Stars and were invited to apply for jobs as camp staff members next year.

Karate duo earns medals in Anaheim

Juancho Forlanda and Jamie Forlanda of Koryo Family Taekwondo Center in Stockton won four medals at the World Taekwondo Hanmadang 2008 in Anaheim from July 17 to 20.

Both started their tae kwon do training in 1992 at the Tracy Boys & Girls Club under local instructor Dennis Hernandez, owner of Moon Central Valley Taekwondo on Grant Line Road, and were involved locally for seven years before they moved to Stockton to establish their own school.

Juancho claimed two gold medals in the event, and Jamie won a gold and a bronze. More than 30 countries were represented at the tournament, which took place outside of Korea for the first time since the championship meet was established 16 years ago.
