The Salvation Army needs at least 200 more volunteers to man
Save Mart, Safeway, Food Max and Wal-Mart stores for two-hour shifts throughout
the next month. The charity group also asks for shoppers to bring their spare
change to the stores to drop in the kettles.
Bell-ringers raised more than $30,000 last year for the
Salvation Army. The group gives vouchers to the McHenry House for the Homeless,
local food cabinet Tracy Interfaith Ministries, among others.
Kettle coordinator Frank DiMenco worries that the strained
economy will mean less change in the Salvation Army kettles.
"Everybody's hurting so bad," he said. "We'll
take all the help we can get."
