Emilee Selna and Melissa Mardsen, gymnasts at Gymstars Gymnastics in Stockton, both qualified for Level 5 state gymnastic competition with solid performances at the Zone 3 Championship held Nov. 3 in Stockton at Champion Gymnastics.
Selna finished in sixth overall with an overall score of 34.425, above the 34.00 threshold needed to qualify for state. She was fourth on beam with a 8.925 and third on the bars with a 8.850.
Mardsen was first on beam with a 9.150 and second on bars with a 9.0. She placed fourth overall with a score of 35.225.
Both gymnasts will compete at the state meet Saturday and Sunday in Visalia.
Elizabeth Higa competes in Level 5 competition at the California Gymnastics Academy in Livermore. The 11-year-old’s road to state competition included stops at the Spooktacular Meet in Rohnert Park and the Zone 6 Championship at her home gym.
In Rohnert Park, she placed first on the bars with a 9.2 and tied for third on beam with a 8.95 en route to her overall score of 34.575. At the championships, she improved her vault score, won the bars with a 9.55 and scored an 8.7 on floor to qualify for state with a 34.375. Her team took third place.
Nine-year-old Alicia Woo also competed in Zone 6 and qualified for her age level’s state meet in Concord. She scored a 9.225 on floor and a 9.35 on beam to place eighth overall with a 35.275.
Competitive soccer Fireballs keep rolling
The Tracy United Competitive Soccer Club’s Fireballs team won two preliminary games Nov. 3 and 4 to qualify in the top of their bracket for the NorCal State Cup in Sacramento.
In a 5-0 win over Stockton on Nov. 3, Taylor Murowski, Isabel Gonzalez and Samantha Farmer all scored goals, with assists from Tiffani Edwards, Iris Cruz, YaYa Willis and Caitlyn Rodriguez.
Dena Enos, Ashley Hallen, Emily Wittkowski and Shayla Simonich earned defensive kudos in front of goalie Taylor Boren.
A 4-2 win in Tracy Futbol Clubs play against Sonoma County Alliance sealed their State Cup berth, with goals from Rodriguez, Edwards, Murowski and Gonzalez.
Taylor Hanes and Farmer did the job on defense.
