Tracy city engineers could soon look into ways to control traffic on a street that gets more than its share of speeders.

Summer Lane resident Shirley Mitchum told the Tracy City Council on Tuesday that cars fly through her neighborhood at freeway speeds, even though the posted speed limit is 25 mph.

"It happens every day, starting at 7:30 in the morning, and it goes until 8:30 at night," she said. "There was a child that was almost hit the other day in a bike lane because of someone speeding."

Summer Lane connects to Cypress Drive and could be a shortcut for those who want to avoid the intersection of 11th Street and Corral Hollow Road. She expects people who live in the neighborhood could be responsible as well.

The council told her to meet with Assistant City Manager Maria Hurtado, and Mitchum said she will ask for more police patrols and possibly some speed humps along the roads.

Mitchum was seriously injured in a car crash in Pleasanton in early 2006 when a speeding car rear-ended her after she stopped for a stop sign. She spent 11 hours in surgery and the next 1½ years in a back brace. She says she doesn’t want to see it happen to anyone else.

"That was someone who had no patience and disregarded the law, and, unfortunately, it has affected my life," she said.
