Tracy kids get a chance soon to face the reality of living in a box on the street up close to the asphalt and turf. McHenry House Family Shelter’s eighth annual Kids in a Box fundraiser will be Sept. 28 and 29 at St. Bernard’s Catholic School.
But before local children can design their boxes for the sleepover, they have to sign up. Registration will be from 3:30 to 8 p.m. today at Tracy Community Center, 950 East St., and any time or any day at McHenry House.
We urge every kid in Tracy to be part of the humbling experience of living as a homeless person for a night. Unlike life on the street, though, Kids in a Box is in a safe and secure spot, with plenty of games, entertainment and food.
It’s also an opportunity for the kids to learn to give back to the community by obtaining sponsorships. The effort begins with a cardboard box.
