Hawks, cyclones and bulls are just a few of the popular student mascot suggestions Mountain House residents can vote to assign as the symbol of the new high school expected to open in August 2014.

A community survey to pick the colors and mascot for the school will be available on the Lammersville Unified School District Facebook page and website from March 4 to 8.

The new symbols will soon be needed for the gymnasium and administration building which are currently under construction.

Dale Hansen, superintendent of LUSD, said on Tuesday, Feb. 26, that the survey is a great way to get residents excited about the opening of the school.

“It’s a great community boost,” he said. “I think this is one of those events that brings a community together.”

On Friday, March 1, LUSD students completed their ballots for the colors and mascot voting. Hansen said the most popular suggestions have been something that is unique to the community, such as the local animals or references to the windy conditions.

Purple, silver and red are among the top color suggestions from students, he said.

Hansen said the district’s objective is to not have the same symbols or colors of high schools in the region.

Once the survey is completed, a committee made up of parents, school board members and students will review the results and narrow the choices down to the top three or five for the school board to make the final decision.

Micaela Vergara, LUSD school board president, said the district is going to “try to make the best choice for everyone.”

“Whatever we choose or the community chooses, it’s going to be important part of our community,” she said.
