The man found dead in a manmade canal Thursday evening was identified as Raul Hernandez, a 58-year-old from Stockton.

The man drove a red Toyota pickup off a dirt road and into the canal about 1 mile east of Tracy Boulevard and Grimes Road, according to California Highway Patrol officer Bob Rickman. He wasn’t wearing a seatbelt.

Rickman did not know how or when the man died or who reported the incident.

It was unknown how long he’d been in the water before he was discovered at about 5 p.m. Thursday.
