What, when?

Last week’s Remember When “mystery photo” shows Vernalis-area orchardist Tom Brenkwitz examining ripening cherries in his orchard in 1977. Cherry growing in the Tracy area is, for the most part, a thing of the past. Tracy’s market niche for early season cherries has been eliminated by early varities grown in the Linden and Lodi areas.

Brenkwitz and his son, Steve, later grew and shipped plum and apricot hybrids called “pluots,” but ended shipping several years ago. Gretchen Talley and Carolyn Arnaudo were among those who identified Brenkwitz in the photo.
