Today’s Remember When “mystery photo,” above, shows two Tracy High graduating seniors being named winner of Efficiency Awards as the overall outstanding members of their class. Who were the students, what year did they graduate and who is making the announcement?

Last week’s Remember When “mystery photo,” at right, generated a good number of responses. Nearly everyone who called or e-mailed identified it as the Tracy Bakery, located across Central Avenue from the Grand Theatre. Bob Mehring said he grew up near there, and the smell of baking bread, rolls and donuts would permeate the neighborhood. He would always save enough money to buy doughnuts after going to a movie at the Grand. He would buy a bag of donuts for a quarter. Mary Avila recalled her husband, Manuel, worked for Tracy Bakery for eight years in the 1940s and early 1950s. He drove a delivery truck, delivering baked goods around Tracy and to Manteca. Also identifying the bakery were Jessie Evens, Arlene Robbins and Elevera Rotherham.
