Both the West and Tracy high girls soccer teams were well-represented in the 2007 Tri-City Athletic League and San Joaquin Athletic Association girls soccer All-League teams.
That’s good news for the past season, but with so many underclassmen on both teams, it might be ever better news for the future.
Tracy forward Katelyn Golik, whom her coaches dubbed “a true forward,” was named the SJAA Most Valuable Forward, after the sophomore netted a league-leading 25 goals en route to the Bulldogs qualifying for the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs for the first time since the league realignment.
Senior captain Amanda Torretto, who scored five goals and set up many others with her free kicks and corner kicks, was named to the All-League team as a midfielder, and freshman forward Breahna Berry, who chipped in six goals while paired with Golik up front, was also named to the team.
Junior Brittney Branscomb, who may take on the captain’s armband next year, made the team as a defender, and freshman Andrea Garcia was selected from the defense as well, giving the Bulldogs a more than solid core of returning players for 2008 and a rare collection of four-year starters.
“If they keep their grades up and don’t transfer to St. Mary’s, we ought to be OK,” Tracy coach Joe Perry said.
For West, junior striker and leading scorer (15 TCAL tallies) Solveig Barnes made the TCAL All-League team as a forward, though West coach Abel Dorado was also used the talented three-year varsity player as a midfielder and sweeper.
Many of Barnes’ goals came courtesy of passes from the foot of junior midfielder Natalie Shaw, who also found herself taking most of the Wolf Pack’s key kicks, including penalties and a game-winning last-second goal against Tokay on March 21.
Junior goalkeeper Melissa Brannen was one of the lynchpins of West’s defense, as she stopped more than her share of shots and a few penalties, and she was recognized with a selection. Senior Gina Troiano and junior Laurel Lewis rounded out West’s selections.
