Tracy is San Joaquin County’s fastest-growing city. In the past year, Tracy’s population has increased 2.7 percent to 46,050.
Residents living on Sunset Way in northern Tracy have formed a neighborhood watch group to rid the area of what they consider problems in drug trafficking and littering at an apartment complex.
The Tracy High FFA vegetable-judging team has captured first place in statewide competition at Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo. Team members are Melissa Chapman, Brian Pombo and Shannon Erich.

Loreen Gambos was queen of the Cinco de Mayo fiesta in Tracy. The event featured a parade, food booths and mariachi music.
First Interstate Bank plans to open a Tracy office at the corner of 11th Street and Tracy Boulevard. (It is now Washington Mutual.)
The Tracy High FFA farm-power judging team took top honors in state competition at Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo. Team members are Roger McLeod, Joe Bacchetti and Ray Pombo.
A record 1,900 persons turned out for the annual Firemen’s Breakfast served by Tracy firefighters at the firehouse at Ninth Street and Central Avenue. Firemen generated more than $3,000 for charities and youth activities.
The Tracy Angels edged town rival Mi Ranchito Saints, 4-3, at the Tracy Ballpark. Kenny Perez had a home run and a single to lead Angels hitting.

A fundraising campaign has a goal of $96,000 to build a new Masonic Temple on Tracy Boulevard.
The city of Tracy and H.J. Heinz Co. have agreed on an annual $10,500 contract for treatment of Heinz wastewater at the city’s sewage-treatment plant.
Nancy Fiack and Gary Welch will represent Tracy High at the annual Girls and Boys State leadership conferences this summer.
Mike Vasquez has won the marble-shooting contest sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Tracy Eagles have named Margaret McHenry as Tracy “Mother of the Year” for her relief efforts.
Eddie Perez had three base hits, including a triple, to lead Sun Valley to an 11-9 win over the DVI baseball team.

Salaries of teachers at Tracy High School have been slashed between 3 and 8 percent as the district deals with falling property-tax revenues. The cuts reduced top annual salaries of $2,400 by $192.
Tracy voters backed James Nance Garner, speaker of the House of Representatives, for the Democratic Party nomination for president. New York Gov. Franklin Roosevelt trailed.
Hoot Gibson is starring in “Spirit of the West” at the Grand Theatre.
