A car knocked over a lightpole on West 11th Street near Crossroads Drive on Wednesday morning after the driver lost control and drove onto the median island.
Traffic officer Vince Weyant of the Tracy Police Department said the driver, James Aaron, 76, of Tracy, was uninjured but was taken to Sutter Tracy Community Hospital. Tracy Fire Department medics reported that he is diabetic and had low blood sugar, which probably contributed to the crash.
Weyant said another driver first spotted the 1996 Ford Crown Victoria moving erratically as it came off Interstate 5 onto westbound 11th Street. Aaron reportedly rear-ended another car in front of Tracy High School but caused little damage.
Aaron drove away, Weyant said, but the woman in the other car followed and caught up to him at Tracy Boulevard. Weyant said the woman tried to talk to the driver, but he failed to respond. The woman urged the driver’s wife, who was in the passenger’s seat, to get out of the car. She did, and Aaron drove off by himself.
Just west of Corral Hollow Road, other witnesses saw the car moving at about 40 mph and weaving. It hit the curb on the right side of the roadway, then veered to the left, jumped the curb and crashed into the pole, which landed on top of the car.
