The West High girls soccer team received perhaps the foulest-tasting tie in team history Thursday, after a last-second Natalie Shaw penalty kick was called back because the yellow-carded Edison player who fouled her inside the 18-yard box wasn’t removed from the field of play.
West was awarded a free-kick in injury time after Edison’s Mariana Rios received a yellow card for pulling Shaw’s jersey.
Despite no impact on Shaw’s would-be winning penalty, the officiating crew ordered a rekick, and Edison goalkeeper Maria Ocampo stopped Shaw’s second shot moments before the referees blew the whistle for the end of the game.
“It’s one of the biggest disappointments, I think,” said junior Brittany Dunnington, who scored West’s equalizer at the 50th minute after an Edison penalty kick gave the visitors a shock lead. “I was so excited — I said, ‘She’s got this, Natalie’s got this’ — and then the refs come back and it doesn’t count.”
West coach Abel Dorado protested the decision, and despite using no profanity, received a red card for his trouble from the referee who ordered the re-kick. Dorado, who said he’d never seen a similar incident in 12 years of coaching high school soccer, will sit out the Wolf Pack’s next game at McNair.
Dorado said the referee in question has a history with the Wolf Pack.
“This is not the first time — I’m tired of it,” said Dorado, who said on Wednesday at Stagg a West player was hit so hard directly in front of the same official she received a concussion, but no call was made.
“I can see it (the decision) if one of my players stepped inside the box, and we’d score we’d have to redo it, but for that reason” Dorado asked.
The other referee said it’s the officials’ responsibility to ensure a carded player exits the playing area.
Personal vendettas notwithstanding, the Wolf Pack (5-1-1 Tri-City Athletic League) had numerous scoring opportunities go wide, high or straight into the hands of Ocampo. The Vikings (0-6-1) were saved only by their defense, West’s shaky finishing, and the lucky calls.
“It was a couple of controversial things,” Edison coach Ruben Martinez said. “But it (the call) went through, and Maria made an awesome save… it was awesome.”
