On a 4-1 vote, with Trustee Mel Jacobson the lone dissenter, trustees of the Tracy Elementary School District voted to hire Jim Davidson as acting superintendent. If carried out, the action could end the joint administration of the elementary and high school districts started in 1962.

George Brenner of Fontana has been hired as the city’s new community development director, replacing Gary Marchio, who resigned to continue his education.

Directors of the Holly Sugar Corp. gathered in Tracy to assess the possible sale of the Tracy factory. Directors decided not to sell the Tracy plant, at least for now.

Tracy High’s basketball team remained at the bottom of San Joaquin Athletic Association standings with an 83-69 loss to Lodi.

50 years ago — 1957

The State Department of Public Works is recommending the construction of the West Side Freeway. The proposal would eliminate the south Tracy bypass that had been planned in the last decade.

Snow fell in Tracy during the early-morning hours.

Tracy High’s basketball Bulldogs were shaded by Oakdale, 45-44, in Valley Oak League play. Buck Del Nero topped Tracy, scoring with 20 points.

Plans for the Diablo Homes public housing project have been unveiled. The project will include 60 housing units in 30 duplex buildings on West Ninth Street and West 10th Street.

Tracy veterans organizations are sponsoring a Saturday-evening dance for teenagers at the American Legion Hall.

75 years ago — 1932

Jack Dempsey, the former heavyweight boxing champion, came to Tracy to meet local sports fans. He held court in the middle of West Seventh Street in front of the Tracy Press building. The “Manassa Mauler” was en route to an exhibition bout in Stockton.

Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Astor are starring in “Around the World in 80 Minutes” at the Grand Theatre on Central Avenue.

The Tracy Relief Committee is trying to keep pace with the demands for food and clothing by families of the unemployed.
