Based on the financial numbers, the Tracy Rural Fire District’s deficit seems permanent.

For the first time since the rural district joined the South County Fire Authority in 1999, it ran an operating surplus — $19,426 — this past year. However, its accumulated deficit reached $6.49 million. That’s up $406,711 from 2005 despite operating in the black.

How come First, the interest on the deficit, $240,585, was greater than the surplus. Ouch! And, the rural district is responsible to pay off the accumulated leave of all of their retired firemen. Double ouch!

How about more frequent firemen pancake breakfasts to cover the deficit
