The Tracy High girls sophomore basketball team blew out Edison at Swenson Gym, 47-27, on Tuesday.

Tontane Gilbert led the Bullpups (14-3) with 19 points. Megan Machado added 13, Lindsey Phelps had seven and Ronnee Peralta added four.

Near the end of the second quarter, Gilbert kicked off a 10-0 Tracy run with two steals. Machado ended the frame with a last-second jumper to put the Bullpups ahead 20-19 going into halftime.

“The team had each others’ backs,” Gilbert said.

In the second half, the Bullpups dominated, outscoring the Vikings, 27-12. Gilbert started a 13-0 run with a one-handed overhand layup over three Viking defenders.

“In the second half, we came out and capitalized on the turnovers,” Tracy coach Mike Granillo III said.

The sophomores will face Tokay at home Friday. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m.

The Tracy High freshman girls basketball team failed to take advantage of a well-played second quarter and was defeated by Edison, 47-43, at Swenson Gym on Tuesday.

“Overall, the girls played hard,” Tracy coach Keith Britt said.

Vanessa Gabriel led Tracy’s scorers with 14 points and added six steals. Stephanie Diaz scored 11 points and reined in six rebounds, and Julia Hand added another six rebounds. Edison’s Shanice Hill led all shooters with 18 points, and teammate Kourtney Herron notched nine points. Tia Vance added eight.

The Bullpuppies (7-9) struggled in the first half. Edison went on an 18-11 run early, but the Bullpuppies made a push, bringing the score to 22-21 at the end of the first half.

“I thought the girls played well in the first two quarters,” Britt said.

But the second half saw the Bullpuppies defeated in a tight contest, scoring 22 points while the Vikings scored 25.

Britt is looking ahead and getting his team ready for next week.

“We need to work on some things to get us ready for league,” Britt said.

Tracy will play its last preseason game Friday against Tokay. Tip-off is 4 p.m.
