A former Lodi High School student, who suffered cardiac arrest during gym class and was resuscitated, is suing the school district, claiming a slow response and a faulty defibrillator caused him brain damage.
Adam Kloose, a senior at the time, collapsed before a game of dodge ball Nov. 4, 2005. After Kloose’s body convulsed on the gymnasium floor, he lay motionless while P.E. teachers gave him CPR. Another teacher retrieved a defibrillator, but the machine failed to work. Paramedics, who brought their own defibrillator, worked on Kloose for 10 minutes before taking him to Lodi Memorial Hospital.
While it appeared Kloose made a full and miraculous recovery — he returned to school a month later and graduated with his class in June — he now claims he has brain damage and has filed a lawsuit in San Joaquin County Superior Court.
The lawsuit claims Lodi Unified School District acted negligently and names Minnesota-based defibrillator manufacturer, Medtronic, as the primary defendant.
